There are over 2,000 rose bushes in the garden from heirloom rose varieties, a wide range of hybrids, and the newest varieties. With such a variety of roses found at the garden that roses are in bloom in nine months of every year. Located on the eastern side of the historic Newtown Park at Holberton street, Newtown QLD 4350, this unique attraction is one of the best historical locations in Toowoomba and the Darling Downs.
A successful community Project
Since its construction in 1999, local Toowoomba and Darling Downs residents, Toowoomba Regional Council and Friends of the Queensland State Rose Garden volunteers work cooperatively to continuously develop the garden. The project is being continually upgraded and is one of the most successful community projects around Toowoomba, attracting residents and volunteers from surrounding areas. The Garden is a true example of volunteerism and is one of the most popular attractions in the city.
Playgrounds
There is modern children’s playground located on the north side of the park adjacent to Pottinger St. The playground has a large array of play equipment from climbing equipment to swings, slides and other sensory equipment which is particularly well received by younger children. This northern section of the park also features numerous undercover picnic areas and free to use gas BBQs, and public toilets making it a very popular section of the park for families hosting small events like kid’s birthday parties.
Sporting areas
If you’re looking for a spot to play some sports, then Newtown Park is for you. The park has three cricket fields, three croquet lawns and a basketball court too. The basketball court has free lighting making it a great spot to come and shoot some hoops after dark when the weather has cooled down a bit. To turn on the lights you simply have to push the button which will light up the court for an hour at which point the automated timer will switch off the lights.
